In this instalment of our interview series with executives from cargo airports, Bettina Kunz, head of corporate communications at Zurich Airport, sheds light on the challenges and strategies shaping the future of the airport\u2019s cargo operations.<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n

\u201cGlobal economic conditions, including geopolitical tensions and shifts in supply chains, are undoubtedly impacting the air freight industry,\u201d Bettina explains. \u201cFor Zurich Airport, this means adopting a flexible approach and working closely with our partners and customers to respond effectively.\u201d<\/p>\n

Addressing long-term challenges<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Looking ahead, Bettina identifies space optimisation as a major challenge for air cargo hubs. \u201cAt Zurich Airport, making the best use of our available space is critical,\u201d she says. To address this, the airport has initiated the construction of new cargo infrastructure to meet the evolving demands of modern cargo operations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe two cargo hangars – West and Mitte – have been in use for over 60 years, and the requirements of the cargo business have changed significantly during that time,\u201d Bettina notes. \u201cWhile standardised palletised goods were the focus in the past, today\u2019s demand is increasingly centred on smaller goods and specialised freight, such as temperature-sensitive products. This trend underscores the need for updated cargo handling facilities.\u201d<\/p>\n

The centrepiece of this modernisation is the new Fracht R\u00e4chtenwisen hangar, a state-of-the-art handling and storage facility. \u201cSpanning nearly 9,500 sqm, the building will feature 20 docking ramps for trucks, dedicated areas for import, export, customs, and security checks, and specialised processes for handling pharmaceutical and hazardous goods,\u201d Bettina reveals. \u201cIt will also include a photovoltaic system on the roof and additional office space.\u201d<\/p>\n

Expected to be operational by 2027, the facility will be leased to dnata Switzerland AG, a ground-handling service provider. Bettina emphasises the importance of such investments, noting, \u201cAround 50% of Switzerland\u2019s export value is transported by air. A robust infrastructure and intercontinental network are essential to support this vital sector.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pharmaceutical and perishable goods also play a significant role in air cargo operations. \u201cThese products require specialised handling, and Zurich Airport is well-equipped with temperature-controlled warehouses and tailored services to ensure their safe transport,\u201d Bettina highlights.<\/p>\n

Embracing technology and sustainability<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Automation and emerging technologies are transforming cargo handling processes. \u201cWe are open to adopting new technologies to enhance efficiency,\u201d Bettina remarks, adding that the airport continuously evaluates innovations to streamline operations.<\/p>\n

Sustainability, too, is a core focus. \u201cAt Zurich Airport, we are committed to reducing energy requirements, improving efficiency, and transitioning away from fossil fuels,\u201d Bettina affirms. These efforts align with the airport\u2019s overarching strategy to minimise its environmental impact.<\/p>\n
